about
Recorded using GarageBand, a single AKG C1000s mic, an old drum set, an old bass guitar, and an acoustic guitar, and my mouth trumpet. Sloppy bridge in tribute to Paul Westerberg. Inspired by seeing Willie Nelson sing behind the note on television one day. Motivated by Steve Poff's 52 song project for 2014.
lyrics
He’s my favorite folk singer
but man he’s getting old
he pauses way too much
and he always sings behind the note
but he sounds good to me
he makes it look real easy
Well he’s touring day and night
and he’s sleeping on the road
his third wife’s getting antsy
but there’s nowhere else to go
cause he sounds good to her
when he smiles in her direction
When he takes the stage
and the lights are shining
He hears those older words
and he’s lost the timing
Yeah a young man
Sings right on the note
And an old man’s
Got nowhere to go
So when he takes the stage
and the lights are shining
He treats those older words
like a friend that’s dying
I’m not your favorite folk singer
and man I’m getting old
I never took the stage
I never hit the road
but it sounds good to me
seeing all the country
That’s why I wrote this song
and I sang right on the note
to put it on the internet
so you can sing along
when you’re driving
and then you’ll come to see me.
If I take the stage
and the lights are shining
I’ll sing those brand new words
and nail the timing
Yeah a young man
Sings right on the note
So does an old man
Who’s just joined the show
So when I leave the stage
and the lights are dying
You’ll listen to these words
and praise my timing
He’s my favorite folk singer
but man he’s getting old
he pauses way too much
and he always sings behind the note
and that’s okay with me
he makes it look real easy
